Beltane Fire Society needs Stewards (again)
The BFS Samhuinn performance is taking place this year on 31 October, going from the castle Esplanade down to Parliament Square, and continuing with an after-club at the Bongo.

Or rather, it will if enough stewards can be found to marshal the event....

Quoting from the email that came round earlier in the week
We are currently 17 stewards short of a Samhuinn! So urgently we need your help.

To help you help us, with your time limited lifestyles, we have created a new Steward Fasttrack Process(™).

On Sunday the 21st meeting at the meadows at 3pm there will be an induction for new stewards. You can get your steward training, walkthrough, H&S all in one day. Your only other commitment is to steward on the night of Samhuinn.

In return you get.

* The best view of Samhuinn!
* Free club ticket!
* Warm internal glow at having helped made it happen!

No need to book, but it would be good to let Charlotte our chief steward, know you're coming so we can get a rough idea of the numbers we're still looking for. You can get her on littlemisslucifer666 at hotmail dot com

If you would like to steward but are not available on the 21st please let Charlotte know and we'll try and accommodate you.

Beltane XX -13
A fortnight from now I should be stood by a bonfire, having just watched the sunrise on the way from the Beltane after-club, and everything will, no doubt, have gone swimmingly.

In the meantime, however, we're still incredibly short of people: last night I went through the list of people who'd signed up but we'd not seen recently and managed to confirm that some of them are still interested. Ideally, though, we could use another fifteen between torchbearers and processional stewards (normally, we're turning folk away by now, but one of our main sources of new people has dried up this year).

There's still time to join in, so just in case there's anyone reading this I've not already tried to recruit, here's what's still to come.

  • Thursday 19 April, 7pm: practice on Calton Hill - meet at corner of observatory wall by the cannon.

  • Sunday 22 April, 12.30pm: first full all-Beltane walkthrough on Calton Hill - attendance at at least one of the two walkthroughs is mandatory, so if you're interested in signing up, but can't make this one, please let me know. This is followed by a Health and Safety briefing (again, attendance at one of these is mandatory, but there's another chance on Saturday 28 April

  • Thursday 26 April, 7pm: crowd control class on the Meadows - not compulsory, but pretty useful

  • Saturday 28 April, 2pm: Second Health and Safety briefing in te Pooka office, Lady Lawson St - only if you weren't at the first one. If you really can't make either, let me know and we'll try and fit something in

  • TBA after Thursday but no later than 6pm on Sunday 29 April - fireproofing session: misting the clothes you'll be wearing on the night with fire-retardant.

  • Monday 30 April, 12.30pm: Second full walkthrough: it's best to have been to two walkthroughs, but if you can't make this one, please let me know. After the walkthrough, there's time to eat something and go get ready (appropriate clothes, costumes, facepaint) before coming back up the Hill (torchbearers for about half eight, stewards earlier) and ready to be in position on the Acropolis by half nine or so.

  • Tuesday 1 May: 1.30am: stand down, relax, have fun, then off to the Beltane after club (with live music and 5am licence: stewards get in free, rest of performers get a reduced entry if tickets bought soon) - you probably don't want to have work to go to
There are other things happening in the next couple of weeks: torch ball making sessions for those who can manage them, fund raising busks will be needing people to shake buckets or give out flyers, the opening of the photo exhibition, an elemental Karaoke night, but that's the bones of it.

Bottom line: if you've can make a walkthrough and a health and safety meeting, we can use you. If you've done any form of stewarding before, that's fantastic, but if you haven't, you'll be amazed how much you can learn in one Thursday evening session.

Late notice, sorry
But surliminal is back in town at the weekend and there's a lunch thing on Sunday. Beanscene by the canal (behind the huge yuppie pub called Cargo on the Fountainbridge roundabout, IYSWIM) at 1.

I dunno if this will make people want to come or scare them away, but I'll have an exactly 3 months old baby with me.

Well we seem to have a plan of lunch at Urban Angel - would 1.30 be ok? Might be slightly less busy than at 1 - followed by National Portrait Gallery to see the exhibit of recent portraits by women (tho I reserve right to kick and scream and say we should go for a walk instead if it's wonderfully sunny!)So far yesses from me, yonmei and hfnuala - anyone else? I'm in town for the next few weekends so date is moveable but I thought I'd try next weekend first. Suggestions for fun events??

Apologies - cancelling tomorrow
The midwife has just cancelled on me (she's stuck in a lift) and rescheduled for tomorrow. The only person I know for sure is coming is yonmei so it's probably best if I cancel. Sorry everyone.

LJN Holiday meetup: report
The LJN Holiday Meetup occurred on Saturday, attended by cangetmad and pisica and the Gnome and Pisica's friend S, with special guest appearance by yonmei who wins the Fashionably Late Award. Bagels were eaten; candy corn was looked at real funny but remained unconsumed; topics of discussion included cheese boards, Monsoon Wedding, and accidentally bringing pointy things onto airplanes.

Anyone for January? :)

Meetup December 10
December 10 was a day most people who responded to the poll said they could make for a meetup. Are people still interested? If so, any suggestions for locales, keeping in mind that shopping areas will be filled with crazed people?

Ooh clicky thing

Candy corn

In the spirit of adventure, I am eager to taste this wonderous foreign substance
Have already tried it, wouldn't mind having more
Have already tried it, pass
Would not eat it unless you did the 'giving cat a worming pill' thing (and I'd bite you afterwards)

Is the brunch at Double Dutch on June 25/26 looking likely to go ahead? A few people said nyet and a few more said 'okay'.

I could do the 25th but not the 26th.

(Trying to figure out if I can fit in a Cthulhu session AND this meetup before the end of June!)

Reminder! - Saturday meetup
Don't forget the LJN meetup this Saturday, 12 noon, Khushi's (that's the one on Potterow in case you know of the other one and were confused). And then, weather and space permitting, on to the Pear Tree, unless anyone comes up with a better idea on the day.

Booked for eight people, with six confirmed, so if you think you might turn up feel free to let me know but we should be okay, and we can always cram more in (presumably without people hanging off the window ledges as in Plaisir du Chocolat!).

I hope to be there at noon sharp, but if the Forth Road Bridge works muck up again as happened last week (contraflow + broken-down bus = badness) I won't. The reservation is under my last name so if you think you'll be there first but don't know what my name is and don't want to stand around saying 'um, is it booked under "livejournal"?' and frantically waiting for someone else to arrive, e-mail me.

While I remember
Back when I started coming along to ljn things there was a brave attempt to have it feature brunch. Which was eventually defeated by the lack of places that do brunch type food in Edinburgh and we settled for bagels.

However, double dutch[1] does a decent all day breakfast including pancakes (I had some, they were very nice) and potato rotis and other lovely sounding things. So I'd like to propose that late June (25th and 26th?) we invade and talk about strange subjects and eat food.

LJN Meetup
Saturday 28 May, Khushi's (26-30 Potterow), 12 noon - ???. Intention to move on to the Pear Tree if it isn't a) raining or b) overrun by end-of-exam-celebrating students.

I will phone Khushi's and book a table if they allow such a thing, so if you think there's a reasonable chance of your attendance, please comment or e-mail me. So far we have 5 attendees [plus La Gnome].
